Carol Tanzman surprised me with dancergirl so I was extremely excited when I was approved on netgalley for a review copy. Despite it's slow start, I really enjoyed this book.
Valerie Gaines is a school news reporter hoping to get a big break. She thinks she has it when an anonymous group called MP starts pulling little pranks, Valerie is excited to uncover what the group wants and who they really are. The plot moves at a similar pace to dancergirl; it moves very slowly with an emphasis on characterization and their interactions with each other. At first I found it to drag but about half way through the book it really picked up because the stakes were higher.
Ms. Tanzman has demonstrated that she can write a variety of characters. The characters in Circle of Silence are a lot different from her characters in dancergirl. I really like Valerie as a character because she was extremely focused, I also liked her group of friends. The only character I had a problem with was Jagger, her ex-boyfriend who is obviously an ex for a reason. So when Badboy Jagger starts showing an interest again, I grew annoyed. I'm not too forgiving of characters too easily. It wasn't until the last four or five chapters that I started to like him and support his efforts to win Valerie back.
Like dancergirl, this book is told from the protagonist's point of view which makes the wait so rewarding and also so painful!
I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys real characters with an intriguing mystery!
