Book Review: Of Triton

Emma has just learned that her mother is a long-lost Poseidon princess, and now struggles with an identity crisis: As a Half-Breed, she’s a freak in the human world and an abomination in the Syrena realm below. Syrena law states that all Half-Breeds should be put to death.
As if that’s not bad enough, her mother’s reappearance among the Syrena turns the two kingdoms—Poseidon and Triton—against one another. Which leaves Emma with a decision to make: Should she comply with Galen’s request to keep herself safe and just hope for the best? Or should she risk it all and reveal herself—and her Gift—to save a people she’s never known?
Once again, Anna Banks infuses Emma and Galen's points of view with humor, intrigue, and waves of romance (goodreads).

1/2

As a fan of Of Poseidon, I couldn't wait to join Emma and the gang for an adventure in Syrena politics and unveilings!

Plot: The novel picks up right where Of Poseidon ended and manages to be serious and light-hearted at the same time (yes, I'm aware it's an oxymoron, just go with it). I really liked the storyline to Of Triton a lot more than Of Poseidon because Banks takes you into the Syrena realm. Also there is a political unrest and mermaid politics have proven themselves to be really interesting. I'm only giving this novel 3.5 stars because towards the end of the novel, things started to conveniently happen. It felt like a lot of information and action was rushed, I would have preferred less action or a longer book (Of Triton is only 246 pages). And this is the middle of the series, I really have no idea what Banks has in store for the final installment.

Characters: One of Anna Banks' strengths is her ability to write great characters. Emma is very stubborn but also a great friend. While she and Galen are an adorable couple, I like that she is able to function without him, I can't say the same for Galen, but I think it's important that we have independent female characters in the YA genre. The supporting characters add just the right of humor to keep the story light-hearted.

Setting: Like I said earlier, I really liked this novel because it delves into the Syrena world. The locations are the same as in Of Poseidon  but with more underwater exploration. I would have loved for more explanation of the Syrena world because I ate up what Banks offered. One thing that I would like to nitpick at. School. I feel like Emma went to school twice this entire novel. School is important...isn't it?

Short n Sweet: Of Triton is a great middle book. It's a quick read, but with the amount of action and information, I wish it were longer. The characters is endearing and the Syrena realm just keeps getting more and more interesting. I want to know MORE!
