Last week, some YA debut authors traveled to Chicago to talk about their debut year and their book It was a fun event learning about different writing processes and fears that each author had during their debut year!
Sarah Henning, Megan Bannon, Gloria Chao, and Jessica Pennington were at the Debut YA Panel hosted by The Book Cellar. It was a great event but the authors got real about publishing and some of their fears related to writing and sales. Here are some tidbits I learned!
- Jessica Pennington wrote the break-up scene first in Love Songs and Other Lies
- Sarah Henning was originally signed to write adult thrillers
- Megan Bannon is a fulltime writer as of August 3!
- Megan Bannon came up with the idea for The Bird and the Blade 10 years ago while watching the opera
- Sarah Henning started writing Sea Witch while on maternity leave
- Sarah Henning wrote her first draft on her cellphone
- There is a twitter group for authors who write at 5 a.m.
- The grandmas in Love Song and Other Lies were based on Jessica Pennington's grandmothers
- Gloria Chao wanted to provide authentic rep of MIT and the fun culture
- Sarah Henning says she is more comfortable killing people than making them kiss
- Chapters 4 and 13 don't exist in American Panda because they are unlucky numbers
