It seems I had my expectations set a little too high for these reads.
Title: Crown of Feathers (Crown of Feathers #1)
Author: Nicki Pau Preto
Source: Publisher
Rating: 3 stars
Crown of Feathers sounded like your classic "sister at odds to take over the throne" YA fantasy book that I typically love. After reading the book and looking at the synopsis, I think the summary was a bit misleading. Veronyka's controlling older sister was prominent in the first fifty pages and then in the last. Their relationship wasn't what I was expecting since we didn't get much of their interactions "on page". The overall premise was interesting, but I never felt the story progress. Because Crown of Feathers was told from three perspectives, I never felt a connection with any of the characters which affected my reading experience. The ending was a surprise that made me more invested in the story, but I'm on the fence if I would continue reading future installments. This is a book for those who already love YA Fantasy and can look past a bit of info-dumping.
Title: My Favorite Half-Night Stand
Author: Christina Lauren
Source: Library
Rating: 2 stars
I'm still on the fence about Christina Lauren. So far I've had one book I really enjoyed (Josh and Hazel's Guide to Not Dating) and a book that made me grit my teeth in frustration (Roomies - not a fan of a white guy overstaying his visa and it's no big while in real life we've got a lack of sympathy at the border). My Favorite Half-Night Stand was an exhausting read for me in the end. I enjoyed Millie's profession and her fascination with the criminal mind, and I found her group of friends to be fun, but in the end this was the story about a girl manipulating her best friend. After matching with Reid under a false profile on a dating site, she kept the charade going. Reid was clearly distraught about being in love with his best friend and this new mystery girl and Millie had no qualms about lying to him. Definitely not for me.
Have you read any of the above? What was your favorite?
Remember when Nev threw that one guy's cell phone off a bride on Catfish? That was great.
What's you favorite Christina Lauren book?
