I think I read the first book in teh ABhorsen series like ten years, and I am not interested in trying to recall what happened.

Maybe standalones don't get the same publicity? Publishers know that they can get you excited for 3 years or more, but a standalone probably has less buzz for a shorter period of time. I have a problem with waiting for subsequent books because I tend to forget what happened in the first ones. That's why I lost interest with the His Dark Materials series and the Abhorsen series; I enjoyed what I read of them, but by the time I got to the second or third books, I'd forgotten too much of what came before.

I like stand-alone novels, but they don't seem to generate the same frenzy as series do. Maybe that's why there seem to be fewer of them (especially in YA).La Coccinellehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03118313017081994087noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6673799319293715824.post-30867928416148866942014-10-22T13:50:44.020-05:002014-10-22T13:50:44.020-05:00See, that's why I tend to read tons of reviews...See, that's why I tend to read tons of reviews about a series first. That way I (mostly) won't be disappointed, although they do spoil me the fun in discovering a brand new book by myself. There's been quite a few that I was DYING to get the sequel and then didn't read it right away and it sat there...and sat there...and now months (sometimes years) have passed and I STILL haven't read it. Sad, right? I just shy away from series for some reason.

I am sad to see Iron Fey and Hunger Games on that list, though, because I've finished both and LOVED them. (In fact, book 4 of Iron Fey was my favorite of the whole series!) I read the second book to Daughter of Smoke & Bone and LOVED it, but the 3rd book is still sitting on my shelf waiting for me. *sighs*Jessi (Geo)https://www.blogger.com/profile/13499493921728476867noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6673799319293715824.post-43418000838932942482014-10-21T11:07:13.855-05:002014-10-21T11:07:13.855-05:00I almost always get hooked in a series and have to...I almost always get hooked in a series and have to read to the end. If I didn't like a book, I usually don't finish it and so won't go on. If I don't like the first book, I won't go on for sure. But if I like it enough to go to the 2nd book, and it is a trilogy, I'll usually finish it out just to know. Often the 3rd book is better than the 2nd, and definitely worth having struggled through to get to it.Lisa Mandinahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02691593776280004137noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6673799319293715824.post-83042979292283445162014-10-20T20:41:40.030-05:002014-10-20T20:41:40.030-05:00Not really; don't read every book in a seriesNot really; don't read every book in a seriesbn100noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6673799319293715824.post-1116956334393138402014-10-20T14:18:48.424-05:002014-10-20T14:18:48.424-05:00Yes, pre-blogging made finishing a series so much ...Yes, pre-blogging made finishing a series so much easier because you weren't visually accosted by all of these cover reveals and ARC reviews! Nope. THERE'S JUST SO MANY BOOKS, so unless the series are review copies I try avoid them until I get a break and read my books, which I'm doing now. I'd be too afraid to see my total. LOL I usually give 'em a 2 book chance because the first installment is often heavy in the world-building department, and if it's the author's first kick of the can, well you can't except it to be perfect. You should definitely give Neill's CV novels another go. :)Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15837765255919617324noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6673799319293715824.post-38063901280488796112014-10-20T09:51:15.898-05:002014-10-20T09:51:15.898-05:00I never make a decision on any series until the en...I never make a decision on any series until the end of book two. I've started pretty much everything and finish pretty much nothing. Alright, so I've finished a far few but it's nothing compared to the amount I've started, especially since nearly everything is STILL ONGOING. Which is pretty horrendous for me considering the fact that I have no memory at all. That means, when fabulous sequels come out, I'm sitting there wondering "what happened again?" It really disrupts my flow. I totally understand this problem though. They're are so many new and shiny things coming out so it's understandable that things you're behind on suddenly become mundane in comparison.
