The Kaiser murdered Theodosia's mother, the Fire Queen, when Theo was only six. He took Theo's country and kept her prisoner, crowning her Ash Princess--a pet to toy with and humiliate for ten long years. That era has ended. The Kaiser thought his prisoner weak and defenseless. He didn't realize that a sharp mind is the deadliest weapon.
Theo no longer wears a crown of ashes. She has taken back her rightful title, and a hostage--Prinz Soren. But her people remain enslaved under the Kaiser's rule, and now she is thousands of miles away from them and her throne.
To get them back, she will need an army. Only, securing an army means she must trust her aunt, the dreaded pirate Dragonsbane. And according to Dragonsbane, an army can only be produced if Theo takes a husband. Something an Astrean Queen has never done.
Theo knows that freedom comes at a price, but she is determined to find a way to save her country without losing herself (goodreads).

Lady Smoke continues to dazzle with its character development.

Don't Fear the Reader: Hysteria + Giveaway

In the 20th century, many young doctors diagnosed young women with "hysteria." Per the above definition, hysteria is a wide range of emotions and predominately focused on women. We all learned from history books that 20th-century medical care wasn't 100% kosher, and women were viewed as nothing more than a nuisance. So let's play a game! Let's pretend this is 1919 and our parents have unfairly thrown into the local asylum What are you in for?

Dumping my bag in the half-painted kitchen, I pulled out my cell phone. Elaina had been really cold
to me at lunch, and we didn’t have any classes together; maybe I should text her to see if she
wanted to come over. I stared at the phone for a moment, considering, but then I shook my head.
She’s probably just having a bad first day. Trying not to think about her, I rummaged through the
fridge, hoping I could find something with either copious amounts of chocolate or salt, but all I came
up with was an apple. I sat down at the kitchen table and sighed before biting into the red skin.
“Mya, is that you?” Mom called from upstairs, and I swallowed the bite of apple.
“Yeah.” I sort of hoped she wouldn’t come down. I didn’t really want to re-hash the awful day, but I
heard her soft steps on the stairs.
She came around the corner and looked at me expectantly. “Well, how was it?”
I sighed. “Okay, I guess. Elaina and I had a fight.”
“About?”
I took another bite of my apple. “I’m not sure,” I lied. I didn’t want to tell Mom that we’d fought
about my looks. It seemed like a ridiculous reason to argue, and I hoped Elaina would get over
whatever was bothering her by tomorrow.
Mom squinted at me. “What did you do to your face?”
I stopped chewing. “What do you mean?” I reached for my cell phone to check my reflection in the
screen, but Mom’s next words stopped me.
“You look different. Fake, somehow. Are you wearing new makeup?”
I shook my head. “You know I hate wearing makeup.”
Mom cocked her head to one side. “Still, something’s different about you.”
I slumped into my seat. Desperate to change the subject, I gestured at the kitchen. “Are we out of
paint?” She nodded, but her eyes studied my face for a moment before shifting to look at the half-finished
walls. “Yes. I was
going to run out and get some more, but—“ She cleared her throat. “I guess I got distracted
upstairs.”
“I can get it.”
“Don’t you have homework?”
I shrugged. “It’s not a far walk.”
Mom hesitated, glancing at the door, but then she nodded. “Okay.” She leaned forward and kissed
my forehead. “Thank you.”
I hopped up and tossed my apple core in the compost bin on the counter. “Another gallon?”
She nodded, and then she pulled me into a tight hug.
Confused, I looked up at her. “You okay?”
“Yes.” Mom pulled away and pursed her lips. “Are you sure you don’t want to wash off whatever’s
on your face first?”
I sighed, exasperated. “I told you, Mom, it’s just me.”
She laughed, but it sounded forced. “No one looks that good when they’re sixteen, sweetie.”

Author Interview and giveaway!

Salut mes amis! Nous avons une invitee special! Kristen Simmons, author of Article 5 and the upcoming Breaking Point, was gracious enough to stop by for an interview! And without further ado-

DL: You were just arrested for breaking one of the Moral Statutes. Which one was it?

KS: Gah. Which one didn't I break is more like it! But they finally charged me for violating Article 7 (Citizens knowingly or unknowingly assisting those in violation of the Moral Statutes are hereby denied trial and shall be punished to the full extent of the law)

I KNOWINGLY helped Chase and Ember. I couldn't say no when I caught them trying to hide out in my garage. The MM caught us when my sneaky neighbors saw some suspicious activity (snoopy little punks). Then, of course, when the MM showed up they saw all my contraband material...the Article 2 violations (Paraphernalia considered immoral is hereby banned and shall not be owned, bought/sold or traded for in any capacity) just kept tacking on after that..

DL: What was your favorite read of 2013?

KS: Well...I haven't read much in 2013 so far...but I'm currently reading Days of Blood and Starlight by Laini Taylor and I LOVE IT. She's an incredible writer - so visual and visceral and beautiful. I loved the first one, Daughter of Smoke and Bone, which I read last year. I also totally loved Pushing the Limits by Katie McGarry.

DL: Who was your favorite character in Article 5?

KS: I'm on Team Chase. What can I say? He's my favorite. (Extra scenes from his POV are now posted on my website by the way! http://www.kristensimmonsbooks.com/extra-scenes/ )

DL: What is your favorite holiday tradition?

KS: Every New Year my husband and I write a love letter to each other and put it in the others stocking to open on Christmas Eve. Reading what we wrote to each other a year earlier is one of my favorite parts of the holiday.

DL: Where do you prefer to write?

KS: I'm boring. I like to write in my office, in the quiet, staring out the window into my backyard. I've tried coffee shops, but I'm way too easily distracted.

Thanks for including me Amber!

And thank YOU Ms. Kristen for visiting, I loved your answedrs! :) Want to know more about Kristen Simmons?

New York, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C., have been abandoned.
The Bill of Rights has been revoked, and replaced with the Moral Statutes.
There are no more police—instead, there are soldiers. There are no more fines for bad behavior—instead, there are arrests, trials, and maybe worse. People who get arrested usually don't come back.
Seventeen-year-old Ember Miller is old enough to remember that things weren't always this way. Living with her rebellious single mother, it's hard for her to forget that people weren't always arrested for reading the wrong books or staying out after dark. It's hard to forget that life in the United States used to be different.
Ember has perfected the art of keeping a low profile. She knows how to get the things she needs, like food stamps and hand-me-down clothes, and how to pass the random home inspections by the military. Her life is as close to peaceful as circumstances allow.
That is, until her mother is arrested for noncompliance with Article 5 of the Moral Statutes. And one of the arresting officers is none other than Chase Jennings—the only boy Ember has ever loved. (goodreads)

The second installment in Kristen Simmons's fast-paced, gripping YA dystopian series.
After faking their deaths to escape from prison, Ember Miller and Chase Jennings have only one goal: to lay low until the Federal Bureau of Reformation forgets they ever existed.
Near-celebrities now for the increasingly sensationalized tales of their struggles with the government, Ember and Chase are recognized and taken in by the Resistance—an underground organization working to systematically take down the government. At headquarters, all eyes are on the sniper, an anonymous assassin taking out FBR soldiers one by one. Rumors are flying about the sniper’s true identity, and Ember and Chase welcome the diversion….
Until the government posts its most-wanted list, and their number one suspect is Ember herself.
Orders are shoot to kill, and soldiers are cleared to fire on suspicion alone. Suddenly Ember can’t even step onto the street without fear of being recognized, and “laying low” is a joke. Even members of the Resistance are starting to look at her sideways.
With Chase urging her to run, Ember must decide: Go into hiding…or fight back? (goodreads)

Character Interview: Kelbian Noel

Hello everyone! I got the chance to speak with Kelbian Noel, author of Elemental.  Kelbian even let me sit down with Baltimore, the leading lady in the Elemental series! :)

The Book.

Baltimore Land is a typical teenager whose parents embarrass her completely. She wants nothing to do with her family's beliefs and is convinced their silly rituals only exist to make her life miserable. All she wants is to be normal, but the fact that her parents are witches seriously messes with her social life.
She's doing alright, with a boyfriend who seems to like her just the way she is and an awesome best friend who is fascinated by her lifestyle, but she's not the most popular girl in her small Utah town. In fact, she's kind of the town freak.
When her boyfriend's ex tries to win him back, Baltimore's emotions get the best of her and she soon realizes her parents' beliefs aren't so silly after all--they're just the beginning (goodreads).

Author:

Kelbian is the author of Elemental and a blogger at Diverse Pages. She lives in Toronto, Ontario with her two children.

Interview.

DL: So how is your life different from the average Witchless household?

BALTIMORE: Well, to be honest, we’re mostly normal. Mostly. My parents do rituals and
they’re into organic living (making everything from the food we eat to the
soap we use) but other than that, it’s what’s on the outside that freaks people
out. We don’t have the same religious beliefs as people in this town. And in
a small town where everyone knows everyone, people notice stuff like that.
Especially when you’re not from here. We’ve only been here a couple of years
and since we arrived my parents made it a point to let people know what they
believe and most of them don’t agree with it. So it makes it impossible for me
not to stand out more than I already do.

DL:  If you could tell your parents one thing, what would it be?

BALTIMORE: Our family’s really honest with each other, so there isn’t really anything that I
haven’t told them. We pretty much say whatever’s on our mind. If there’s one
thing, I guess it would have to be that I understand why my brother left. He
left two years ago and it’s still a pretty sensitive topic around here so we don’t
really talk about that. But I totally get it. My parents expect us to be witches.
They don’t say it, but you can tell. Brooklyn wanted to live his own life, find
his own path. I don’t think he could have done that without hurting them, so
he left. The more I think about it the more likely I am to do the same thing
someday.

DL: It’s Friday night in Utah, where can I find you?

BALTIMORE: With my best friend, Bridgett. My boyfriend likes to go to parties and stuff,
but I tend to lay low. So we mostly hang out on Sunday afternoons or after
school to study. Bridgett never goes out either, so we spend our Friday nights
watching movies or just talking about how we can’t wait to graduate and get
out of here.

DL: Does being a witch making dating harder?

BALTIMORE: Well, I’ve been with Toby since just a few months after moving to Miner. I’m
still not quite sure how that happened. We met and we clicked, even though
we’re nothing alike. But he’s my first real boyfriend. He thinks my parents are
really weird, but like I tell everyone, I’m not a witch. I’m just the product of
two of them.

DL: What is your favorite read?

BALTIMORE: I never used to read anything but non-fiction. Mostly biographies. But Bridgett
got me into witch fiction. It’s strictly entertainment and of course my parents
have no idea (they’d never approve) but I love it. I think the way the world
sees people like me is hilarious. It’s so far from the truth, but it’s fun to
escape into a different world. If being a witch was really like that, I’d have no
complaints!

Witch fiction, how appropriate! :) It was great talking with you Baltimore!

But wait, there's more!

Kelbian is a DOLL and she has included some fun things to give away! We have a kindle copy of Elemental and a Witch Swag pack. The swag pack has:
A pair of pentacle earrings
A crystal
Sage incense sticks
Petitgrain therapeutic grade essential oil (one 5 ml bottle)

Doesn't that just SMELL pretty? THIS GIFT IS OPEN INTERNATIONALLY
