Book Review: For a Muse of Fire

Title: For a Muse of Fire (For a Muse of Fire #1)
Author: Heidi Heilig
Genre: Young Adult | Fantasy | Magic
Publisher: Greenwillow Books
Publication Date: September 25, 2018
Source: Won
Format: ARC

A young woman with a dangerous power she barely understands. A smuggler with secrets of his own. A country torn between a merciless colonial army, a terrifying tyrant, and a feared rebel leader. The first book in a new trilogy from the acclaimed Heidi Heilig blends traditional storytelling with ephemera for a lush, page-turning tale of escape and rebellion. For a Muse of Fire will captivate fans of Sabaa Tahir, Leigh Bardugo, and RenĂ©e Ahdieh.
Jetta’s family is famed as the most talented troupe of shadow players in the land. With Jetta behind the scrim, their puppets seem to move without string or stick—a trade secret, they say. In truth, Jetta can see the souls of the recently departed and bind them to the puppets with her blood. But the old ways are forbidden ever since the colonial army conquered their country, so Jetta must never show, never tell. Her skill and fame are her family’s way to earn a spot aboard the royal ship to Aquitan, where shadow plays are the latest rage, and where rumor has it the Mad King has a spring that cures his ills. Because seeing spirits is not the only thing that plagues Jetta. But as rebellion seethes and as Jetta meets a young smuggler, she will face truths and decisions that she never imagined—and safety will never seem so far away.
Heidi Heilig creates a vivid, rich world inspired by Asian cultures and French colonialism. Her characters are equally complex and nuanced, including the bipolar heroine. Told from Jetta’s first-person point-of-view, as well as chapters written as play scripts and ephemera such as telegrams and letters, For a Muse of Fire is an engrossing journey that weaves magic, simmering romance, and the deep bonds of family with the high stakes of epic adventure (goodreads).

For a Muse of Fire was complex and addictive.

Book Review: Devils Unto Dust

Title: Devils Unto Dust
Author: Emma Berquist
Genre: Young Adult | Historical Horror | Zombies
Publisher: Greenwillow
Publication Date: April 10, 2018
Source: Publisher
Format: e-ARC

Ten years ago, a horrifying disease began spreading across the West Texas desert. Infected people—shakes—attacked the living and created havoc and destruction. No one has ever survived the infection. Daisy Wilcox, known as Willie, has been protecting her siblings within the relatively safe walls of Glory, Texas. When Willie’s good-for-nothing father steals a fortune from one of the most dangerous shake-hunters in town, she finds herself on the hook for his debt. With two hunters, including the gruff and handsome Ben, to accompany her, she sets out across the desert in search of her father. But the desert is not kind to travelers, and not everyone will pass through alive.
Western meets horror for this riveting story about survival, family, and inner strength. Tense, short chapters propel readers from one action-packed scene to the next, while Willie’s distinctive, introspective voice deepens the emotional stakes with every turn of the page. High concept and character-driven, Emma Berquist’s debut will satisfy fans of The Magnificent Seven, Rae Carson’s Walk on Earth a Stranger, and HBO’s Westworld (goodreads).

Devils Unto Dust was a zombie book with a lot of heart.

Author: Rae Carson
Genre: Young Adult // Historical // Adventure
Publisher: Greenwillow Books
Publication Date: September 22, 2015
Format: eARC

The first book in a new trilogy from acclaimed New York Times bestselling author Rae Carson. A young woman with the magical ability to sense the presence of gold must flee her home, taking her on a sweeping and dangerous journey across Gold Rush–era America.
Lee Westfall has a secret. She can sense the presence of gold in the world around her. Veins deep beneath the earth, pebbles in the river, nuggets dug up from the forest floor. The buzz of gold means warmth and life and home—until everything is ripped away by a man who wants to control her. Left with nothing, Lee disguises herself as a boy and takes to the trail across the country. Gold was discovered in California, and where else could such a magical girl find herself, find safety? Rae Carson, author of the acclaimed Girl of Fire and Thorns trilogy, dazzles with this new fantasy that subverts both our own history and familiar fantasy tropes.
Walk on Earth a Stranger, the first book in this new trilogy, introduces—as only Rae Carson can—a strong heroine, a perilous road, a fantastical twist, and a slow-burning romance. Includes a map and author’s note on historical research (goodreads).

Book Review: Rivals

 Title: Rivals (The Ivy #3)
Author: Lauren Kunze
Publisher: Greenwillow Books
Genre: New Adult // Drama // Romance
Format: eBook
Source: Library
Decisions, decisions . . . You've survived your first semester and captured the interest of not one but two of the hottest guys on campus.
Now who are you going to choose?
Callie Andrews returns for her second semester at Harvard determined to do better than the previous fall, where those Bs on her report card seemed pretty good compared to the state of her extracurriculars (F, as in if at first you don't succeed, you should probably stop trying), friendships (C-minus, since she and former BFF Vanessa are still on thin ice), and love life (D, as in don't even go there). But various campus rivalries soon threaten to thwart Callie's resolve. Will Callie ever be a match for--
Grace Lee the take-no-prisoners managing editor
Alessandrathe gorgeous transfer student
Clintthe guy who might just be too perfect
and Gregorythe guy who may never be perfect enough.
Callie will face some of the toughest choices imaginable: in friendships, in loyalties, and in love. The pressure to pick a side--and a suitor--has never been higher. But will she and her friends choose well? (goodreads)

Ha! Because first semester wasn't crazy enough, Rivals hits us with even MORE bombshells that I gobbled up happily.

Plot: Rivals begins with students coming back to J-Term (which, as I understand, is an optional semester at Harvard?) and we begin with the mystery of "who is Callie with?" in response to the cliffhanger in Secrets. But of course, things aren't smooth sailing. We've got jealousy, mistrust, awkward friendships, and an anonymous reportings on the elite social club that Callie and her friends belong to. The Ivy Insider is basically the Harvard version of Gossip Girl. In my opinion, this was the juiciest of the books so far and I can't wait to see how this all wraps up in the finale, Scandal.

Characters: In this novel, we meet Gregory's girlfriend, Alessandra, the product of a Brazilian super model and a millionaire. Of course this creates even more tension with the Clint - Callie - Gregory dilemma. Callie experiences something that she doesn't want to admit to (jealousy) and must learn how to handle it. One thing that I really liked about this book, is that it seems like we got to see more about Dana. Dana has always been in the background as the quiet Ultra conservative Bible thumping character, but I was happy to see her portrayed as a human being instead of a stereotype. I think that's my one complaint with a lot of these characters (as I mentioned in my review of The Ivy), a lot of the characters are stereotypes. But this is a guilty pleasure, so I won't hold it against the series TOO much (but it does bother me every now and then). One other thing. I found Callie and Vanessa's relationship to be kind of confusing. They weren't talking, but they would occasionally make biting jokes at the other and text the other. I didn't really understand if THEY knew that they had drama.

Setting: HAHVAHD. We follow Callie around her classes, her social clubs, her job at the library and to Puerto Rico which was a really fun part of the book.

Short N Sweet: Rivals ups the ante on drama which, let's be honest, is all that we care about. I'm going to be sad when I have to say goodbye to Callie and the gang, and Harvard in the final book Scandal.

Book Review: Secrets

Title: Secrets (The Ivy #2)
Author: Lauren Kunze

Publisher: Greenwillow Books
Genre: New Adult // Drama // Romance
Format: eBook
Source: Library

Reputation, Reputation, Reputation.
You're a student at the most prestigious university in the country, and you've been tapped for the most elite social club. You've made it
Now Don't Blow It
Callie Andrews triumphed during her first semester at Harvard: she made incomparable friends, found the perfect boyfriend, and received invitations to the most exclusive secret societies. But she may have ruined every-thing with one ill-fated night. Now she's keeping secrets from everyone, including--
Clintthe upperclassman who's too good to be true
Vanessathe best friend turned backstabber
Gregorythe guy who's a total(ly hot) mistake
and Lexithe social queen who wants to bring Callie down.
But Callie didn't get into Harvard by giving up, and she isn't about to now. Besides, she's not the only one with something to hide. . . .(goodreads)

In this sequel to The Ivy, the laughs don't stop and the drama gets juicier! And with a cliffhanger at the end, you'll need to read book 3 ASAP.

Plot: The last book ended in an (evil) cliffhanger and Secrets picks up a few day after The Ivy. I was kind of expecting to see Callie and Co's reactions regarding The Spoiler Secret but....not really. And when it was resolved, it wasn't as big as a deal as all the characters had made it out to be. Nonetheless, Kunze solves one problem and throws in about three more, so the entertainment is endless.

Characters: A few more characters are introduced in Secrets but the novel still focuses on the same lovable gang. And I will admit, this novel has a pretty strong love triangle (something I usually hate) but I think it was done well. It was the question of passion v stability, "what I want" v "what I need" and I thought that it was well thought out. Regardless, I am Team Gregory, but there were times where I questioned which was best for Callie.

Setting: Not much has changed, we are in Harvard, they go to class and they drink. It's still a beautiful campus that I love reading about!

Short N Sweet: Secrets is a strong follow up to The Ivy with more drama and more characters that you wish were your friends in real life!
