Spring Book Blast: A Phoenix First Must Burn

Sixteen tales by bestselling and award-winning authors that explore the Black experience through fantasy, science fiction, and magic.
Evoking Beyoncé’s Lemonade for a teen audience, these authors who are truly Octavia Butler’s heirs, have woven worlds to create a stunning narrative that centers Black women and gender nonconforming individuals. A Phoenix First Must Burn will take you on a journey from folktales retold to futuristic societies and everything in between. Filled with stories of love and betrayal, strength and resistance, this collection contains an array of complex and true-to-life characters in which you cannot help but see yourself reflected. Witches and scientists, sisters and lovers, priestesses and rebels: the heroines of A Phoenix First Must Burn shine brightly. You will never forget them (goodreads).

Black Girl Magic in every story. I'm a big reader of fantasy and sci-fi, but the genre skews White. I'm so excited to read about fantasy worlds that center around black women and nonconforming black people. Imagine how powerful that'll be for nerdy black kids all over.

It sounds like How Long Til Black Future Month. I recently read How Long Til Black Future Month and I enjoyed the anthology, but realized that I needed more fantasy in my life. Clearly A Phoenix First Must Burn heard my cry.

Star-studded author list: There are 16 stories written by 16 different authors. I know quite a few of them, but not all, so I'm excited to learn about more Black YA authors so I can add their books to my never-ending TBR.

That cover. This is pure vanity, but this cover is absolutely stunning and I need to put it on my shelves!
This are stressful times and I'm sure we can all use a distraction, that's why I'm giving away one copy of A Pheonix First Must Burn from an indie book store of your choice! Unfortunately, this giveaway is for U.S. residents. A winner will be chosen on Sunday, April 5. Complete the rafflecopter below, good luck!
